Shopping Center Vacancy Still Falling, but Mall Vacancy Creeping Up

Going to keep things short but sweet this week. Been hard at work on quarterly reports and the grind continues… I do, however, have some core national shopping center stats ready to share with you. A report with full analysis will be forthcoming shortly.

But before I get going on this week’s topic, I need to sneak in a little plug for the ICSC Idea Exchange in Napa, California coming up in November. I will be the keynote speaker there and will give my forecast for national retail trends in 2015. As with all ICSC events, they are fantastic venues for networking, dealmaking and informative breakout sessions with interesting speakers. This one will be November 20th/21st at the Marriott Napa Valley Hotel and Spa in Napa, California. It’s a great opportunity to combine business and pleasure in wine country.

Overall shopping center vacancy fell again in Q3, though just barely. But one sector saw vacancy edge up and that was the nation’s mall inventory. We reported last quarter that mall vacancy had crept up for the first time in four years, but that it wouldn’t be the first. It wasn’t. Mall vacancy increased from 4.4% to 4.5% last quarter. This quarter it jumped to 4.7%.
